Why Net Metering in Pakistan?
Net metering is a billing system that rewards solar users for the extra electricity they generate. When your solar panels produce more power than your home needs during the day, the surplus energy is sent back to the grid. Your digital meter runs in reverse, creating a credit you can use at night or when your energy use exceeds production.
This means you only pay for the net energy used — the difference between what you consume from the grid and what you supply to it. Thanks to digital bi-directional meters, this system is efficient, accurate, and budget-friendly.
What is an AMI Meter in Pakistan?
An AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) meter is a smart device that tracks energy use in real time. It allows two-way communication between the consumer and the utility company.
With an AMI meter, you can:
-
Monitor your energy usage anytime
-
Receive accurate, real-time billing
-
Track both your energy usage and the extra power your solar system sends to the grid
For solar users, AMI meters are essential for net metering. They ensure your savings are calculated precisely.
How to Get Your Solar System Activated (Step-by-Step)
Here’s how the net metering activation process works in Pakistan, simplified into clear steps:
1. Install a Solar System
SMS Engineering provides fully net metering-compliant solar systems. We offer solutions for homes, businesses, and industries — from 1kVA to multi-megawatt setups.
2. Prepare the Application
After installation, we prepare your net metering application based on SRO 892(1)/2015. Our experts handle the paperwork and ensure it meets all regulatory requirements.
3. System Inspection & NOC
The Energy Department inspects your system. If it complies with LESCO’s SOPs and the SRO rules, they issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC).
4. Sign the Agreement
You’ll sign a 3-year agreement with LESCO, allowing you to officially supply excess power to the grid and become a registered generator.
5. Get Your Generation License
LESCO forwards the agreement to NEPRA, which issues a generation license. This makes you an independent power producer for three years.
6. Net Meter Activation
Once NEPRA approves your license, LESCO installs and activates the net meter. You can now:
-
Export extra energy to the grid
-
Reduce your electricity bill
-
Earn credits or payments from your solar generation
